Becoming a Range Aide
Range-Aide qualifications
- Have passed a MSF Rider Course, either a BRC, MRC: RSS or ERC.
- Have and show evidence of a valid Class “M” or Class “L” Illinois drivers license or an equivalent from another state.
Job description, Range-Aide
Works under the guidance and supervision of the course Instructors as directed to perform such duties as:
- Assist Instructors in setting up cones for range exercises.
- Assist Instructors in preparing motorcycles for instruction.
- Assist Instructors in maintaining motorcycles throughout the course.
- Assist Instructors in securing motorcycles at the end of instruction.
- Assist Instructors in keeping range and storage area clean.
- Assist Instructors in non-instructional roles during the course*.
* The Range Aide shall not be used to instruct students or demonstrate exercises on the range unless he/she is a certified motorcycle Instructor.
Attire
All program personnel (Range Aides as well as Instructors) shall wear long pants, a shirt with sleeves (no tank tops), and sturdy over-the-ankle footwear at all times when teaching in the classroom or on the range. Additionally, clothing should present a neat and professional appearance and must not be torn, ripped, or contain offensive language or images.
Furthermore, the following protective equipment shall be worn by Instructors & Range Aides when riding to, from, and during all rider training activities:
- Helmet
- Eye protection
- Full-fingered gloves
- Long-sleeved clothing
- Long pants
- Sturdy, over-the-ankle footwear (not cloth or canvas)
Ideally, all protective gear is worn at all times.
Starting times
Range Aides are expected to work 15-16 hours per course, dependent upon number of days of instruction and whether the Lead Instructor desires the Range Aide to be there on the first day. It is important to remember that each course will require more than the listed times on the part of all personnel; it is only for pro-rating payroll for partial courses that salaries are expressed at an hourly rate.
